Water Saving Ideas/Discussion
This page begins with ideas from a brainstorm after the 2007-07-16 Meeting
- Water catchment (most popular suggestion, we need a design)
- off the back garages
- cisterns and downspouts
- cistern with shared streets
- Base line studies of water usage - comparison and tracking
- inventory of water saving devices (toilets, showerheads, faucets)
- inventory of water saving devices (toilets, showerheads, faucets)
- (Lara and Chris expressed interest in working on this)
- Replace current washing machines with better water saving models
- (2 washers at 117 Bimini are under contract from Consolidated. Our contract will not end for some time and is difficult to end unilaterally)
- Composting toilet
- Outdoor pee toilet
- (Under current regulations apartment units can only have a composting toilet in addition to a flush toilet. Our bathrooms are so small it would be difficult to install a composting toilet without removing the flush toilet, sink or tub. We believe we do have the option of adding a composting toilet outside that everyone could use.)
- Improve fixing of dripping faucets, hose bibs, leaking toilets, etc.
- Grey water
- from downstairs washer
- kitchen sinks
Details and information on water saving methods
- Water Catchment
- Diverting water that falls on impervious surfaces to a cistern for later use as greywater. Reduces runoff and water usage. Common methods of implementation involve routing rain the falls on roofs to gutters, then through a downspout and debris screen to a storage barrel. Novel applications could include ground level catchment, for example storing street runoff.
