Move Request Policy

Move Request Policy and Procedure
Original Policy approved by Building Committee (as the “Internal Move Policy and Procedure”): 18 February 2002
Revised/Renamed Policy approved by Building Committee: 14 February 2005

  1. All moves must be approved by the Building Committee.
  2. Move candidates must fulfill requirements for the unit requested. Requirements are as follows:
    1. One-Bedroom Units: minimum 2 persons, maximum 4 persons.
    2. Other Single Units: maximum 2 persons.
(Exceptions, such as a single parent with two children in a single unit or a single person running an in-home business in a one-bedroom unit, may be considered at the discretion of the Building Committee.)
  3. All move requests must be for a specific unit, specifically by unit number. Requests along the lines of “the next corner unit available” are not acceptable
  4. Requests may be made when a unit becomes available or when a unit is announced to become available (such as when a resident gives 30-day notice).
  5. All move requests must be made to the Building Committee at its regular scheduled meeting. Internal move requests will not be decided at the first meeting where the request is initiated, but the decision will be scheduled for a subsequent Building Committee within a reasonable time from the initial request. The move request will be publicized via email to building residents in order to allow for receipt of possible competing move requests, and to notify others potentially affected by the decision, so they can participate in the process.
  6. When new residents first move into the building a similar procedure is followed. New resident room assignments will not be decided at the initial meeting where the proposal is first raised, but the decision will be scheduled for a subsequent Building Committee meeting. The new resident move proposal will be publicized via email to building residents in order to allow for receipt of possible competing move requests, and to notify others potentially affected by the decision, so they can participate in the process.
  7. In the case of a move request with no competing requests, the Building Committee will decide to approve or deny the request taking into account factors including but not limited to: stakeholder needs, demonstrated commitment to the community and Los Angeles Eco-Village Visions and Values, noise concerns, personal compatibility between residents, physical limitations, etc.
  8. In the case of a move request with one or more competing requests, the Building Committee will strive to meet the needs of all stakeholders. The Building Committee will endeavor to create the best fit and may propose other arrangements to determine if they would be acceptable to all parties. The Building Committee may take into account factors including but not limited to: stakeholder needs, seniority, demonstrated commitment to the community and Los Angeles Eco-Village Visions and Values, noise concerns, personal compatibility between residents, physical limitations, etc. Seniority, defined as the length of time the person has resided in the community, will be generally considered the tie-breaker between competing requests, though the ultimate decision is that of the Building Committee. For competing requests between multiple residents initially moving into Los Angeles Eco-Village, seniority begins upon receipt of the applicant questionnaire.
  9. It is expected that a person who has moved into her/his requested unit will not request another internal move for the next 2 years. (Exceptions, such as an addition of a partner or roommate, may be considered at the discretion of the Building Committee.)
  10. Rehab issues will be addressed in a future Rehab Policy document.
